Creating our Eglomise Mirror with the Water Gilding Process.

Updated: Jul 26, 2022

We had a project for a Vintage Eglomise Mirror for above a fireplace and documented our process on the video below, demonstrating how we make our Eglomise Mirrors using the water gilding process with silver leaf.

1st we clean the glass with glass cleaner and then using a water size we individually apply the silver leaf to the back of the glass, being very careful not to break the leaf. This is a delicate process and time consuming but well worth the effort!

After all of the silver leaf is applied which has taken approximately 2 hours we now move onto the drying time. We position the glass at a slight angle for this so that the liquid can run away making it a slightly quicker process but it can still be up to 24hours for all of the liquid to evaporate.

Once the leaf is dried we then burnished it with a cotton bud or a soft pad to remove some (not all) of the creases and leftover leaf. This creates the soft mirror and the main patina effect we are looking for with the Eglomise Mirror.

On this project we wanted a 'vintaged' effect so we aged the leaf a little with the black with another process achieving to look we were after. The black backing was added to seal in the leaf and the mirror was completed.

If you would like any information or have any projects in mind we have all gold and silver leaf available and can produce custom sizes to suit any interior.
