Vintage Mirrored Glass Splashbacks - to toughen or not to toughen?

Have you ever delved into the world of specifying a vintage mirrored glass splashback but then found it difficult to find the right product? don’t know where to start, or do you go round in circles asking the same questions but don’t get anywhere with the product that you ‘actually’ need?

This blog will help with avoiding the pitfalls and guide you along the way to a perfect and functional vintage mirror splashback for your kitchen or renovation project.

Vintage Mirror Kitchen Splashback.

Vintage mirrors are a hugely popular design product in 2022 and will continue to be so through the next few years. As there are so many options available and social media showcasing beautiful renovation projects these products are a sought-after design feature, but they need to be specified correctly within kitchen interiors. What are you on about I hear you cry!?

The majority of stocked vintage or silver mirrors available on the marketplace that can be cut to size for a splashback, cannot be toughened for use behind a hob. This is a key element to the design process and can be overlooked many times and then when the question is asked, it is disheartening to then start the process again to find a supplier who can toughen your mirror or worse still go for another product all together!

Stocked Silver Mirrors

Why, you ask, does it need to be 'toughened' glass mirror?

Well, let me explain…. the process of toughening glass is to heat normal ‘float glass’ in a furnace to over 1000 degrees centigrade. Once the glass is cooled it is very strong and can then with stand heat and shocks. If it ever did break, then it would shatter into thousands of safe pieces and not into shards but and more importantly is it safe to be used behind a heated area i.e., cookers and hobs.

Any pre-made mirror cannot go through a toughening process as the silver, which is already integrated into the product, wreaks havoc with the machines and can simply ruin the machines at a huge replacement cost.

Here are Forentina and Linet, (naturally… hence the purpose this this blog) - we can toughen our vintage glass mirror splashbacks because we make them by hand. We add the silvering and the process of vintaging the mirror once glass has been toughened. Therefore, we can make a huge variety of vintage toughened glass mirrored splashbacks in many different sizes and finishes for newly renovated kitchens across the UK.

How fab!

These are a selection of toughened mirrored glass splashbacks we have made and had installed in kitchens across the UK.

We are specialists in this field and can supply different thickness of glass, tinted or low iron glass and reeded glass too. As we handmake every price we can add different levels of vintaging too from light to heavy; Eglomise to plain silver.

When searching for a vintage mirror using terminology such as vintage, antique, aged glass, foxed glass or distressed glass mirrors will bring great results but ask the question about being toughened too, (now you have the knowledge) so you don’t waste your time having it all measured and then it can’t be produced.

Sometimes these searches result in gilted framed mirrors being shown, but hey these look good too but maybe not for a splashback? (could be a new product here?..)

Feel free to get in touch to see how we can make a special, one-off, unique handmade vintage mirrored toughened splashback today!
